The business, Surface Preparations Equipment and Coatings (Pty) Ltd trading as SPEC, was established in 1971 in Port Elizabeth and has undergone a number of name changes, ownership and core business functions. SPEC’s main objective is to provide a specialist corrosion protection, civil-, mechanical- and electrical maintenance in the field of raw water engineering service to the industry and has been trading since 1984 from its premises in Perseverance.

The principal business of SPEC, being corrosion protection, concrete and mechanical rehabilitation, site-based contracts in all aspects and having available the necessary expertise and quality control management, enables it to offer turnkey solutions to all corrosion and maintenance problems. SPEC is an approved applicator for the majority of manufacturers and suppliers of industrial, marine and offshore protective coatings. All personnel, plant and equipment necessary for surface preparation, application and quality control testing of protective coatings are available in-house.

The business also renders its services on site, throughout Southern Africa. At the premises situated at 19 Kurland Road, Perseverance, the factory is fully equipped to render corrosion protection together with mechanical rehabilitation (general mechanical) services. The firm’s fully enclosed blasting booth is an expansion of its business operations and SPEC is one of only a few companies in the greater Nelson Mandela Metropole with a blasting booth that conforms to all environmental specifications. Its offices are also based at these premises. Our latest addition is a wet dipping plant.

SPEC is a sustaining member of the Corrosion Institute of Southern Africa (CISA), the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). The firm holds a 7ME PE, 7CE PE and 6EP PE grading with the CIDB, enabling us to tender for projects to the value of R200 million. We commit ourself to ensure that we train and promote the previously disadvantaged people who shows an interest in our fields of operation. In this regard, we assist our workforce with payment of children’s school fees, uniforms and stationary at primary and secondary education levels. SPEC further provides Enterprise Development services to external beneficiary enterprises for the purpose of financial, operational and/or developmental sustainability.
